I was absolutely captivated from the very first page of this book! RJ Francis has a unique ability to draw the reader into the story with such vivid descriptions that you feel like you are there watching the scenes unfold. She made a make-believe world seem very real! The plot was interesting and engaging and had me reading late into the night as I didn't want to put it down. The characters were well developed and I could relate to them because they were absolutely believable. I loved the relationship between Jaimin and Elaina and I really felt for Natasha. I would definitely recommend this book for all lovers of fantasy novels and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

One of the categories for this book seems to be Young Adult, but it works for adult readers who want an escape. It's a well-crafted tale, and the characters are interesting and different in each of their ways to make them believable. There is magic involved, and it works well in the narrative. The story goes along at a good clip all the way through. I like that the teenagers, who are the focus of the book, are intelligent people in their own right, with talents and minds of their own (and jobs, like I had). If I was a young adult (12-16) reading this book, I would not be insulted by the writing, I would likely fall in love with these characters and feel sad at the end like I used to when I was that age and reached the end of a good book. I'm pushing forty now and don't fall in love the way I used to, but with this novel, I never felt like I was reading a YA book, and that's how it should be.

I was going to give this four stars because I liked it (I didn't love it, I liked it), but the fifth star is because it didn't insult my intelligence as an adult, and if there was a teenager in my life, I would recommend it whole-heartedly. The author's style is graceful enough that the mystery of who the characters are is revealed throughout the book. You're on a journey with them, instead of being bludgeoned with exposition and history, and it worked really well for me. Yes, there are some predictable things in the book, particularly if you've read a ton of books like I have, but what matters is that it's still enjoyable.

As a side note, Natasha is awesome. If I was a teenager--oh, who am I kidding, even as an adult I completely associate with Natasha. She's my favorite. I also like Elaina, but mostly because she knows how to make artisan cheeses. Also, Nightmare and Tyrant are great names for horses.
I fully enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one.

This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I don't normally leave a review but I read this in 2 sittings and have purchased the next book. The story line is different and not totally predictable. I enjoyed it didn't have to worry about bad editing and grammar. Well written, great characters and moves at a nice pace. Well worth a read for YA or Adults.
