A lot of people don’t find King’s writing “scary” but there’s something to be said for the slow, creeping sense that something is just not right. Needful Things has this in spades, and it’s my favorite kind of King story. The town of Castle Rock has had its fair share of bad luck over the years (gruesome murders, rabid dogs and the like) but it’s still a nice, pleasant small town. Maybe the people gossip too much, but it’s a charming community.
Yet when a new merchant comes to town, the townfolk’s careful, pleasant facades begin to slowly fall apart. Mr Gaunt has something they NEED and they’ll do just about anything to get it.
Secrets, suspicions and old grudges rise to the surface and what starts with a simple purchase by an 11 year old boy unleashes the hidden hate boiling in this small town.

In my humble opinion, there are two types of stories King does better than anything else -- the quiet, small, personal stories (like "The Body" and "The Shawshank Redemption") and the huge, sprawling, multicharacter epics (like "It" and "The Stand"). "Needful Things," King's farewell to the mythical town of Castle Rock, fits squarely among this second category and is just as good as any previous entrant.
Picking up unresolved characters from a wealth of his other stories (ranging from "The Body" to "The Dark Half" and many more), King weaves a great tale of a small town where emotions run high and grudges don't fade. Enter Leland Gaunt, proprietor of a new shop in town, "Needful Things." Whatever it is you want the most, Gaunt has it -- and for a very fair price. Or so it would seem.
Gaunt somehow knows the history of this town, the old rivalries, the quiet hatreds and the dark secrets, and he uses it to play the various characters against each other, turning the town from a powder keg into a ticking time bomb.
This book has all the King trademarks -- the omniscient devil-figure (Gaunt), the flawed but ultimately noble hero (Sheriff Alan Pangborn), well-realized children and dozens of fleshed out characters that bounce off each other and interact as realistically as anyone you've ever met. At once both dark and hopeful, it's a great read and worth picking up for any King fan.
This was a good read, as I say most of the books I've read are. Stephen King has such an imagination, im not sure how he comes up with these stories, let alone not have any repeat. I love how some characters from other books pop up or are just mentioned in each of his books.
Some King novels are absolute marvels, others not so much. Better than most horror writers by far but not all of his are white hot blazing infernos. This however is one of those that shame the surface of the Sun!
I have now read this book twice and found it delivers excitement both times. It is a highly entertaining book and highly recommend it.
Very nice paperback edition. I’m a librarian and this puppy will hold up for many years. I’m easy on my things and you would barely be able to tell I read it all.
Book Review One of Mr. King’s best books. If you like horror or supernatural story lines, please read this book! (Or any of his others.) In a nut shell this book asks what would you sell your soul for? What is your Needful Thing?
I've read Needful Things a couple times before but couldn't find my copy so i order another. In fact, I've reread a lot of his work. Normally, I order the Ebooks now but it was much cheaper ordering the used book (1st edition) so, go me. Love all books Stephen King except the Gunslinger series, just couldn't get into it. Best storyteller ever and i read a lot.
I bought this in hardback to update my tattered paperback. As a long time Constant Reader, I re-read Mr. King's books frequently. This one is no exception. As always, King's characters are his strongest point. He creates fully fleshed characters that the reader grows to care about or loathe, but is rarely indifferent to. Needful Things slowly ratchets up the tension with the atmosphere of dread. It's a long book but it never seems long when reading it. Recommended.
